"MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MAYDAY! An Analysis of the Shared Relationship Between Black People & Water." (2019-Present)
*Project Series Containing Many Moving Parts! LEARN MORE BELOW!
MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MAYDAY seeks to explore the complicated relationship between Black people and bodies of water. In the spirit of something being lost below the waves, only to resurface again; I am looking for what emerges or resurfaces from this study to help make sense of how water has been weaponized against Black
bodies, looking specifically at the Atlantic Ocean. The overall hope for reconciliation or healing becomes centered at the heart of this work, in which I revisit the time period of
enslavement to explain how Black people have
become a relic of the impacts of forcible and violent movement across the ocean. Strategically utilizing this word 'relic,' I am making a connection to the 'zombie' horror figure, as a way to highlight the severity of the Black person's trauma to water and how that remains. The zombie will also be used to emphasize the topic of embodiment and social death as it relates to anti-blackness. It is my goal to not only bring about new ways of understanding the relationship between Black people and water, but how we continue to wade through death everyday.
Overall Project to Include:
Film: (Distant Memories, Living Dead, etc.)
Photography: (Underwater Shoot, Archival Images, etc.)
Soundclips: (M3 Water Soundscape)
Performance: (Dance Pieces, Acting/Theater, etc.)
Poetry: (Paradise Park, etc.)
*I foresee this project spanning out over years to come. I have so many ideas on how to expand on Atlantic/Oceanic scholarship and I am excited to dive in deeper!
